I need to buy a 4k monitor for coding and basic web stuff. All of the sub-$500 4k monitors are branded "gaming monitor".

    My priorities are,
    * More pixels, especially vertically, I guess 3840x2160 is my only option and is fine
    * Compatible with older HDMI outputs (t4xx thinkpads running linux)
    * Decent color accuracy, I occasionally edit photos in darktable
    * vesa mount possible
    * Bright enough, but I think everything is bright now?
    * Fast enough, but I think everything is fast now?

Are there gotchas I should be aware of, considering eg MSI MAG321CUP vs Gigabyte M32U?

I'd like to read about how leftist movements have grown in the past. The stories we know are often about after the movement has grown, but how did it get there?

What led to the anarchists being a significant force in Spain in the 1910s?

How did the communist parties grow in Indonesia, Chile, India, China? How about socialists in Bolivia, england, france, germany?

Can we learn any lessons from these histories to offer light in these dark times?

Are there academics writing about these themes? Is there Graeber I should be reading?

@chjara the first thing is you'll run out of page table ram. Also most kernels have limits on the number of mappings they will give you.

@chjara on my pet embedded system (amd64 running ancient 4.x Linux with 4gb ram) calling malloc(1mb) repeatedly runs for about 600,000 iterations, at which point the VSS is 586 GB and the RSS is 2.2 GB, then the kernel OOMs and kills it.

There's more than a GB used up during the process that doesn't get accounted to the hungry thread, which is an interesting bug.

At its peak, the /proc/<pid>/status says VmPTE: 759592 kB, almost a gig of in kernel data structures keeping track of my garbage...

@lanodan @chjara I'm fairly sure a Tadpole Sparcbook was used on the ISS circa 1998, but 10 minutes of ddg hasn't found me a reference yet.

    • tech? no! man, see...

@technomancy @brennen I'd... actually kind of like to try out the kvstore described here? Writing my queries as erlang map-reducers sounds like fun.

@Polychrome for Android apps specifically, the developer option "Enable Bluetooth HCI snoop log" should be useful.
