Lix: "Wrong with this picture? Well, it is war, that's why I am here. Can't be a war reporter without, right? So, in that regard, everything is right and everything is wrong. Yeah... but there is something else... I could do with a man who is more than just a fling. Someone reliable who just loves me like I am. Someone who is interested in me instead of just my body. Ah, well, who am I kidding? That's not even in the stars. Might as well seek comfort in the wrong ones."
Lix would be brilliant in teaching politics, sociology, and geography. Always hopping between those when teaching, which means if you take her politics class, you will learn how human societies work and how topography shapes society - and vice versa. No matter which course you take, you get the big picture.
In her free time, she would teach girls self-defense and confidence so they can make their way in a male dominated society and not become victims of domestic abuse.
Randall is interested in everything, like a renaissance scholar. So, if he chose a teaching career, he most likely would look out for something interdisciplinary. I think he would feel uncomfortable teaching in front of a whole auditorium of listening students, he'd rather be doing field trips. Archaeology, perhaps? It has a lot of history but also science involved. I think that would suit him.
Randall: "Both have their own beauty. At sunrise, the world begins all fresh and new and it seems nothing bad can happen... until it does. Sunset says the world is coming to a rest after the craziness of the day. They are beautiful and I can't favor one above the other, since they are opposites and yet, like an old, married couple, they can't and shouldn't be separated."
Lix: "I'm not a morning person. I prefer a sunset every time!"
Me: *sitting outside, drinking tea* My brain: "But what if orang-utans had figured it all out and said: screw it, we are not here for that sh*t." Me: "What?" My brain: "When they had civilizations just like ours, saw it would destroy the planet, and simply said: nope." Me: "They are living in the forest, run around naked and don't build anything that makes that life more convenient!" My brain: "See?"
That was at 8 a.m. and I STILL can't stop thinking about it.😳
@veronica Yeah, I originally had crew members threatened with freezing to death in one part of the ship in my WiP but changed it around to overheating because of that. In general, temperature management became a problem.
#WritingWonders Day 1 I'd go to the canteen of the #HeraldPetrel because while after the explosion the meals are restricted, you usually find someone there. That way, I could catch up on the latest status of the ship. And the latest gossip, too. I mean, if I HAVE to be on this nightmare of a ship, I'd rather be informed what's going on. Besides, I would meet my characters, which is exciting. And get a coffee and see if it is really THAT horrible or if Galahad is exaggerating. Art by @fieryzard
Okay, I think I'll just start the new #WritingWonders for this month instead of catching up on last... and as boring as it is, i will take #HeraldPetrel because I hope it sets me into the right headspace for writing Season 2. Perhaps I play again with Siff, since I feel she will be the MC of it.🤔
#WritingWonders Day 5 Names are always important in my stories and appear as:
- Someone doesn't like their given name and gets angry if called by it
- some characters will always refer to someone close to their heart as "my wife", "my daughter",... instead of the name, nearly superstitious that saying the name will give the other person power
- changing from calling by rank or last name to first name always holds significance
- getting people's names wrong or not being able to remember them
#WritingWonders Day 5 Siff is a good example. In-universe and the commander's culture, a siff is a "cold, sharp gust from the North that comes suddenly out of nowhere and cuts like a knife"
If you know a bit about Norse mythology, you will see different meanings in our universe/culture.
#WritingWonders Day 5 Often the names of my characters are just what they tell me it is. They come and say "I am Siff Braghor" and I am left with that. But sometimes, there are two meanings, the one it has in-universe and another one that we as 21st century readers from Earth can see with our own cultural background. They are, like some movie/series/book references and some codes in-jokes and Easter Eggs that don't contribute to the plot but are funny and/or serve as foreshadowing.
#WritingWonders Day 4 Siff "Traveling? That's an Earthling thing, isn't it? I tell you something: if you weren't so obsessed with traveling and stuck to that tiny blue spot at the end of the universe where you lot belong, my home planet were still intact. So, leave me alone with traveling! And what do you want, anyway? I am first officer on a cargo space ship. I go everywhere the company needs me to. Is that traveling enough for you? Yeah? Herald! Earthlings..." *turns around and wanders off*
#WritingWonders Day 6 The Herald Petrel is full of nicknames, starting with the ship often been referred to as "floating scrap heap" (which Bergman hates, but that's another story). However, Siff doesn't have one (at least not one anybody would dare say to her face) and wouldn't react especially kind to being called one. There are some names coming up later in the story, but it is more titles describing special relationships. Spoiler territory, also how they are handled.
Trivia: Usually, there is a side character called Peter in my stories. A homage to #PeterCapaldi, they share at least one trait with one of his roles and contribute to the plot in unusual ways. Peter Bergman i.e. has OCD like Randall Brown. In season 1 it is the obvious traits like keeping his console organized, in later seasons I plan to explore more of the hidden ones like intrusive thoughts.
#WritingWonders Day 7 Siff: "None of your business, get lost!" Galahad:"Phtat'Grthak." S: "How dare you!" G: "What?" S: "Is that an Earthling thing? Dragging out the darkest secrets and presenting them to someone we don't know?" G: "What? I was talking about me. I'd never go there! Civil war and no one knows who is friend and who is enemy anymore." S: "Oh." G: "What?" S: "Nevermind. You!" *scowls at the reader* "Yeah, you with that face! Forget what I said or I'll break your neck." *stomps off*
