my background is more RF/mixed signal/DSP stuff these days but i have dabbled with fpgas computer architecture/alu design/pll design and some very mild LLVM adventures

@pry honestly i just wish docs were better. old computer manuals are just lovely in the way they convey technical information about a system while being accessible and not skimping on detail or accuracy (ch. 6 of the c64 manual is a good example)
other than that i've always wanted to develop a minimal yet highly structured operating system. just enough to take notes and use for hobby computing. preferably implemented on top of a risc softcore processor.
the plans for userspace are focused on hackability. i am torn on what a programming language for this system would look like. a stack based language was the first choice. but it did not take long to realize that this would create a lot of overhead in an eventual gui toolkit. currently leaning towards designing a small and elegant functional lang, it'd be nice to try and embrace dataflow principles as well.
still pondering these details to make for a nice project during my internship and eventual working life. srry for the boring rant, i yearn for simplicity in home computing.

@pry my ece school of programming guess is that you iterate over the array and check n and n+1 (make sure not to go out of bounds). If n+1 makes the sequence non-monotonic, set a flag (let's call it X) to 1 (initially zero), set n as n+2, and update n+1 to be the new n plus one.
Then all you do is make sure X <= 1, making sure to return once X equals two or you hit the end of the array since it does not ask for a general "how many elements need to be removed" type solution.
