starting an uptime-miku progress thread because i can!

today i finished rewriting the login logic to use password-authenticated key exchange (PAKE), namely OPAQUE with Argon2id, SHA-2 and Ristretto255. This was obviously inspired by @kora telling me about PAKE which despite my general crypto knowledge had never crossed my path.

so now logins are super secure! it was actually surprisingly easy to get this working, the opaque_ke crate has copy-paste-able examples for login and registration.

@whitequark @mei linux so far, in my experience, has largely failed at good oom management. it is not capable of killing processes when performance degrades, only on hard system oom. this state is often only reached with certain application behaviors (continuous allocation etc.) which in my experience are rather rare. if the oom killer is configurable, i don’t know how, and it’s not exposed to me in any convenient way (server or desktop).

@whitequark @mei writing this on a 128gb machine with my other main machine being 32gb, and it’s still a problem on both. (even more so on my servers, the main one has only 4gb.) i know for a fact on that machine near-oom situations will prevent me from using ssh, and on the 16gb server i have had >10 full-system-oom crashes due to memory-hungry ffmpeg transcodes.

@SuperDicq no, ffmpeg is really bad at metadata stuff though their encoder is fine. in my experience metaflac is the only super precise tool when it comes to flac header blocks, and i say this as an implementer of flac in both directions. there’s no tool like the reference tool.

it has been incident two (2) and zero (0) days since automatic MTU adjustment on wireguard failed and a bunch of shit in my infrastructure broke with weird patterns.

I advise you: in every single wireguard config, add
MTU = 1280

@lanodan uuuh my gnu tar on arch linux does not? -z is not “autodetect compression”, it’s “use gzip”. it explicitly errors out when you give it compressed content on stdin.

optionally, replace bsdtar by tar with -xz arguments, but that won’t work with anything except gzipped packages (bsdtar auto-detects compression, so it’s more general)

shell monday: if you want to download a package from npm, without actually using npm, some basic unix shell work does the trick:
