for a country that is nominally not engaged in any wars I wonder how many people the US military kills every week

zip (zip@wandering.shop)'s status on Tuesday, 23-Jan-2024 21:05:08 JST zip I love living in the UK where I regularly find myself saying, without enthusiasm, “yay, the House of Lords has prevented the latest piece of unbridled fascism”
The HoL is the most structurally small-c-conservative part of the political process, filled with the grandees of previous administrations (plus Boris’s hairdresser), which already gives it a solidly Tory tilt before you consider the age and establishment careers of its membership.
And it keeps outflanking the government to the left.

zip (zip@wandering.shop)'s status on Tuesday, 23-Jan-2024 21:05:07 JST zip It’s basically custom-built to prevent any Labour government from doing anything too socialist or that is detrimental to the interests of landlords but apparently there’s such tremendous inertia to being an old conservative fuck from the 1990s that they apparently play the role of telling the present lot that they are, even by Tory standards, being cunts.

zip (zip@wandering.shop)'s status on Saturday, 20-Jan-2024 22:32:47 JST zip this came from a conversation about why you'd vousvoyer someone in "voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir" and apparently you'd do that if it was 1974 and you're being very formal.
Apparently you wouldn't do this to proposition a group of people, though, even if it gramatically sounds like you might

zip (zip@wandering.shop)'s status on Saturday, 20-Jan-2024 06:30:34 JST zip we're told that the best focal length for portraits is 80mm or whatever, but also, perspective is based purely on where you're standing. so would it not make more sense to say "the best distance from a subject is..." instead?

zip (zip@wandering.shop)'s status on Wednesday, 10-Jan-2024 17:58:39 JST zip quite aside from the horror of sticking asylum seekers on a fucking barge away from town and giving them £5 a day to live on, I'm just floored that they don't even give these poor people their own fucking rooms

zip (zip@wandering.shop)'s status on Friday, 05-Jan-2024 19:57:31 JST zip i get it taking hours to build the linux kernel on a pentium in 2002 but why is building boost something a modern PC still can't do without taking an era? it's genuinely weird. surely building packages from scratch should be comically fast nowadays

zip (zip@wandering.shop)'s status on Sunday, 24-Dec-2023 05:38:53 JST zip A small delight of the modern era is that the full might of the massive commercial surveillence and marketing infrastructure has put some of their average $600-or-so-per-car spend towards trying to entice me because I spend time on urbanist channels and subreddits, which counts as an interest in cars.

zip (zip@wandering.shop)'s status on Tuesday, 17-Oct-2023 07:32:53 JST zip accelerationists are such optimists, they think there's a bottom to bounce off of. fact is people adjust to arbitrary amounts of things being worse if they feel powerless to stop it, the next generation will think it's normal and we can absolutely get all the way back to feudalism and 90% of the population wiped out well before people see the light and stop voting Tory

zip (zip@wandering.shop)'s status on Thursday, 28-Sep-2023 19:41:04 JST zip My job is having redundancies and I expect I'll be one of them. I've been told to call myself a staff engineer due to my experience and I'm a full stack, will learn your language and framework kind of a girl. All the usual bells and whistles, kubernetes and networking and The Cloud all the way to CSS.
I'm looking for UK remote, ideally at a fully or mostly remote company. A four day week would be a major plus.
