@hakan_geijer they were building a yoga retreat with a friend so they were part of a group and the group included some Moroccans who knew the areas around the mountains. So in a sense yes, but they were locals hired to help with the group travelling around the area.

@hakan_geijer ok, so they said they don't know enough to tell you about going end-to-end, but it might be worth getting a guide.

You'll be OK~ with just French most folk are very friendly and helpful, but Arabic would also be helpful as many poorer people don't speak good French. Beware of bandits (hence the guide).

There is a lot of good food if you're vegetarian, they ate unsure about vegan food.

As for maps, you'll maybe get by if you're very experienced, but again, get a guide. Also, don't neglect having a paper map, solar can be plentiful, but then sometimes it isn't, so you shouldn't expect to always be able to charge your phone.

@miiamustang Fully agree with what you're saying about being unwilling to fight or serve in what is essentially a band of thugs with guns. But you're only going to get a revolution with groups willing to defend themselves against these people. The only way you can realistically get the weapons training, tactical thinking and self reliance is by either being the most self-disciplined teen to of ever lived, grown up privileged or to join up.

That aside, this lack of understanding as to why people might join up at all is kinda goofy given how many people join the military because of a bad home-life or familial expectations. If you can't extend forgiveness to someone who did something dumb as a kid, are you really going to build a forgiving and loving society? We already live in a world where people cheer for harsher sentencing and get mad at money for rehab programs.

Numerous leftist leaders historically have encouraged military service.

If you can get weapons and combat training for free, sanctioned by the state, then why not?

The revolutions need people with discipline and the capability of self defense.
