    @Sarah Brown While I agree that it's the governments and industries that are the biggest polluters and have the most power to change things - if they want to. I still think that what many millions of people do or don't do also matters. If nothing else to keep hope up and despair down.

    @Sarah Brown I think we must allow us to be humans and make those occational mistakes. What is important is the direction, not the bumps on the road. I recycle a lot, but there are days when I am less thorough. I don't drive an electric car because.. well money but also because I have no place to charge one. Instead I've chosen one as small and light as I can live with. It's not perfect but it's what I can currently do.

    @Tobias I had to visit an optician (not sure if that's the right term in English) for mine. That included getting my eyes checked to get the right strength and also to make sure there wasn't any medical condition causing my problems.

    @Sarah Brown Multifocal (glasses) make a huge difference. I started needing reading glasses, but eventually had to take them on and off so often that my eyes couldn't catch up. I can still drive safely without them, but barely read a book. Now with these, I'm wearing them all the time. It took a while (a month or so) to get used to but I wouldn't want to be without them.

      On Hate Scaling Laws For Data-Swamps
      `Scale the model, scale the data, scale the GPU-farms' is the reigning sentiment in the world of generative AI today. While model scaling has been extensively studied, data scaling and its downstream impacts remain under explored. This is especially of critical importance in the context of visio-linguistic datasets whose main source is the World Wide Web, condensed and packaged as the CommonCrawl dump. This large scale data-dump, which is known to have numerous drawbacks, is repeatedly mined and serves as the data-motherlode for large generative models. In this paper, we: 1) investigate the effect of scaling datasets on hateful content through a comparative audit of the LAION-400M and LAION-2B-en, containing 400 million and 2 billion samples respectively, and 2) evaluate the downstream impact of scale on visio-linguistic models trained on these dataset variants by measuring racial bias of the models trained on them using the Chicago Face Dataset (CFD) as a probe. Our results show that 1) the presence of hateful content in datasets, when measured with a Hate Content Rate (HCR) metric on the inferences of the Pysentimiento hate-detection Natural Language Processing (NLP) model, increased by nearly $12\%$ and 2) societal biases and negative stereotypes were also exacerbated with scale on the models we evaluated. As scale increased, the tendency of the model to associate images of human faces with the `human being' class over 7 other offensive classes reduced by half. Furthermore, for the Black female category, the tendency of the model to associate their faces with the `criminal' class doubled, while quintupling for Black male faces. We present a qualitative and historical analysis of the model audit results, reflect on our findings and its implications for dataset curation practice, and close with a summary of our findings and potential future work to be done in this area.

    I've seen some attempts on Hubzilla public timelines (I was seaching for alternative hubs to host a clone). They usually involved either crypto investments, betting or young ladies with very little clothes. Or all three. But they're not really succeeding.

    There seems to be some confusion about what the Fediverse is. Much of it seems to be from people who have never been told that the Fediverse is a multitude of different networks that are connected (over ActivityPub). Some are old, some are new, and what features they have also varies between them.

    If there is a problem with Hubzilla, it's not "because that's how the Fediverse works".
    If there is a problem with Friendica, it's not "because that's how the Fediverse works".
    If here is a problem with Calckey, it's not "because that's how the Fediverse works".
    If there is a problem with Akkoma, it's not "because that's how the Fediverse works".
    And if there is a problem with Mastodon, it's certainly not "because that's how the Fediverse works".

    I would like everybody to be aware that there are so many different flavours out there. And I think that's beautiful. Pick something that's suitable for your needs, something you like, something that you are comfortable with. (You may pick more than one!)
