@aral In the allegory of The Matrix I don't think the machines are 100% meant to only reflect machines.

The message (where there is one) isn't "Your computer is going to be a fascist" it's "Your computer is going to aid a fascist".

But mostly I think they just wanted to make a cool movie and worked their way backwards from there into an allegory for bonus points.

@tokyo_0 Yeah and Meta prior to joining the Fediverse got 130 million monthly active users very quickly on their own.

That's more than the entire non-Threads Fediverse which is around 15 million total accounts, not MAUs and that number doesn't subtract how many are bot accounts.

Meta doesn't need the network of the fediverse nor do they want it, it's about the protocol.

    • ActivityPub allows them to dodge regulatory scrutiny if they ever want to merge Facebook, Instagram and Threads.

    • It allows them to dodge the "walled garden" criticisms.

    • It allows them to exert pressure on competitors.
Like if TikTok joins the Fediverse, that now means that Meta will have a library of TikTok videos for their users to watch.

Mastodon, MissKey, Pleroma, Friendica, PixelFed, etc... mean nothing to Meta other than being a good excuse for when the DOJ starts asking questions (they can point to us and say "See we're not being unfair, we play nice with the Fediverse").

Also worth noting that Facebook has 3 billion monthly active users, the total number of non-Meta Fediverse accounts aren't 0.5% of what Facebook serves in a month.

@tokyo_0 Building a new network off of Instagram a social network they bought?

There's multiple cases here so you'll have to be specific.

A lot of people in the #Fediverse are saying that Threads joining is a form of "Embrace, extend, extinguish" and IMO I don't think that's the case.

There's no need for Meta to kill this network or absorb it.

ActivityPub by design favors big servers like Meta's, it also not being nomadic (like BlueSky *cough*) means that users can't easily jump ship from a server they don't like.

I already see the #FediPact posts discussing leaving notable servers like Mastodon.social and it's silly IMO.

By design this whole network was built on shaky ground and when discussion of any Bluesky style improvements came up most users flipped out.

We'll be here again and again until those improvements come, if they ever come.

Reality is Meta knows they're king already and they don't need the regular users on the Fediverse.

IMO they want the WordPress profiles.
They want the illusion of freedom for celebrities and corporations.

"Host your own Facebook Page" basically.

I also lets them duck any regulatory oversight.

@skotchygut @atomicpoet it looks like BGS's are just optional relays, so I'm guessing no.

@atomicpoet I'm not sure "resource-demanding" means it can't run on a Raspberry Pi.

Nor does it sound necessary from the descriptions.

This all sounds like Google AMP .sxg for posts and BGS's are just relay servers (like Google is for AMP .sxg).

My only worry is how a private page would work, but nobody seems to really have this sorted out (except for maybe SSB and that comes with large tradeoffs).
