Meta has started rolling out Threads, the Twitter competitor that was previously known under project names such as Barcelona and P92.

They deserve all the mockery in the world.

Few journalists have a spine. They keep kowtowing to Twitter even though Elon Musk loathes journalism, and openly voices disdain for it.

So of course, Elon Musk mocks the Press -- they don't stand up for themselves.

And quite frankly, if they're not willing to stand up for themselves, how can any of them hold Elon Musk accountable?

On this subject, @paul, the former developer of third-party Twitter-client Tweetbot who pivoted to launch the Mastodon-client @ivory, posted this earlier:

"Reddit is totally pulling a Twitter.

I'd say a Reddit client is at least technically possible, unlike Twitter, but pricing would have to be around $10/month which really reduces the # of users that would be willing to pay to where it may just not be financially viable."

Reddit's new API pricing is completely unhinged. @christianselig, maker of the popular iOS Reddit client Apollo is being asked to pony up $2 million per month to keep the lights on for his app. Even if he restricted access to just his subscribers, the API cost per average user is more than he charges. Reddit promised reasonable pricing, but now it feels like a rug pull.

Can someone convince him to adapt Apollo for @LemmyDev instead?

@atomicpoet@calckey.social @yoyoel@macaw.social @socialmedianews@venera.social Meh. I believe Twitter’s days of influence will come crashing down this year starting in June when Instagram launches their Twitter killer (which will potentially kill off adoption for BlueSky too).

While I have my doubts about Instagram’s intentions, I think their entrance will encourage mass adoption of ActivityPub, & we will probably see more people (especially celebrities) opt to host their own content while interacting with Instagram’s version. We will probably witness celebrities & academics move away from Twitter then.

Elon also is desperate to recoup some of the money he foolishly spent on the platform.

At this point, does anyone expect #Twitter to not legally bully academics?

I agree with @yoyoel@macaw.social that this is unconscionable.

At the same time, it's more and more apparent that academia needs to migrate to the Fediverse.

@TheActualBrian She sounds perfectly capable of looking after herself and just as terrible as he is (she's in Trump's pocket, worked on The Apprentice and was appointed to a committee by him). I wish people would stop automatically thinking she's being victimized simply because she's a woman, it's super sexist. @TheActualBrian A lot of male clinical narcissists tend to like to surround themselves with women because they don't see women as competition and women are more likely to perform all kinds of emotional labor. They may hate women but they also hate other men and they see other men as more of a threat. Just like women who are clinical narcissists will use sex as a means to manipulate and charm men and see all other women as competition for male attention and power.

She's there because people like Musk love putting women in charge of failing enterprises. It reinforces their belief that women can't achieve.

I highly suspect the new CEO is mainly there to get Trump elected (people keep mistaking this for being a business venture when it's more like a rich man buying a newspaper to control the message because controlling the message and manipulating politics is what makes his real money and where he has his real fun playing with power...). @socialmedianews

I've seen some utterly bizzarre takes that makes me think the person whose post I read has either not been around long enough to not know the cycle, or they are being deliberately obtuse because we must pRaIsE tHe EnGiNeErS or something like that.

Does calckey have any means of defederating from servers? I've still got my Mastodon hat on when it comes to behind the scenes stuff, so it would be super cool to know if this was possible or not (no worries if it isn't though, I'm sure it can get supported soon!)
