    @soatok @pemensik

It is absolutely maddening that the answer to the question, "how do I send an encrypted email in 2025?" is, "you don't."

And that when pressed further, the best workaround one can offer is, "just use Signal chat in lieu of email."

But that's somehow where we are.

Truly the worst and dumbest timeline.

Even if we grant the difficulty of finding a modern web browser that is both functional and free from harm, choosing Brave really is a breathtaking display in the art of grasping at straws.

I've had this nagging feeling reading about the apparently multiple near-misses involving USAF aircraft in the Caribbean. It's not just that these individual incidents happened, which is bad enough. It's also what it says about the incompetence of mission planners and air crew going into a likely war. If they can't get this sort of basic stuff figured out now, how much of an absolute shit show will it be once a shooting war starts in earnest?

@hrbrmstr on the other hand, if you're staying at a rental place and find out that one of the last renters left their streaming services logged in, it's your civic obligation to watch stuff on it.

And make it strange so it makes their streaming recommendations awkward.

    Keep it weird, gang.

Please understand that I'm offering this as a friend, as someone that has advocated and evangelized for Mastodon and the Fediverse, and as someone who has overall enjoyed the platform that you've built for us.

Rather than making excuses for poor UX that causes harm to users based on simple misunderstandings, it might be better to address the underlying issues.

If people keep getting harmed, then it's not human error, it's poor design.

PSA, the new Android 16 update will surreptitiously reenable fingerprint device unlock even if you had intentionally disabled it before. Depending on where you live and your threat model, this might not be safe! Americans have little protection against law enforcement compelling biometrics unlock. To make matters worse, the fingerprint unlock settings are found in a different part of the security settings UI than the rest of the device unlock settings. If you update to Android 16, make sure your device unlock settings are what you intended.

FWIW, a bunch of British TERFs joined Bluesky a week or two ago and tried to tone police their way into acceptance.

They were immediately and relentlessly dragged by nearly every single user on Bluesky before being bodily ejected straight into the sun.

Tolerating bullshit-spewing bigots and sheltering them through pedantic calls for civility is a choice.

It's telling that the GOP is rejecting Mark Robinson because he was attracted to transgender people, and not for hating them.

There's a lot of disqualifying stuff going on here, but frankly little of it is brand new. A lot of it is just further details on views he has publicly and proudly admitted. Mark Robinson's rampant anti-semitism, transphobia, holocaust denial, and wide ranging bigotry were all well known for months or even years. Any and all of it should have been disqualifying long before today. I just think it's weird where the GOP chooses their red lines, where this kind of stuff is disqualifying in their eyes, and where this kind of stuff is OK or even desirable.

I'm trimming back some of the time I spend on social media because it has been limiting some of my progress on personal goals. But I also fight a lot of FOMO, and this place has a been a genuinely useful place to stay informed of some topics like cyber threat intel and infosec news. I'm curious what strategies people have found useful for limiting their social media time on Mastodon while staying up to date on key topics. I'm leaning towards a combination of one or more lists of key accounts as well as the "explore" tab of popular/trending posts. Suggestions?

@patrickcmiller "caused" should probably be "contributed to." Also, for a study that claims to be about "human factors", there's a remarkable lack of introspection about the actual underlying human factors beyond "blame the human operator." No serious industry portraying itself as safety/security-focused would ever accept a double-digit percentage of human error resulting in significant negative consequences without a deeper examination and direct addressing of the underlying causes. We collectively need to stop blaming our users.
