I'm imagining proprietary software coming with something like a Surgeon General's Warning. "Warning: The use of proprietary software poses a serious threat to your digital rights and freedoms. See fsf.org for more information."
I see that there's a new release of libreboot out, after the merger of osboot and libreboot. This marks the first release of libreboot to contain nonfree software. Let's all have a moment of silence for the loss of the freedom-oriented libreboot.
Imagine living in a world where you weren't restricted on what you could do with your own computers... that's software freedom. The @fsf is fighting for your rights and pushing for a future where software gives people the freedom to control their own digital lives. Won't you support them? https://www.fsf.org/appeal#SoftwareFreedom#FreedomToShare
@amerika Free software doesn't impose a responsibility for the maintainer to support modified versions, or even to support their own versions. They can do those things if desired but support isn't part of the Free Software Definition: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html So it's quite a jump to say it falls on the original person. Case in point: The GNU Project doesn't provide support for their software.
Free software is a philosophy of human rights and liberation, not control. It gives users freedom & empowerment, putting them in control of their own computing. Strong copyleft licenses like the AGPL work to defend this from being taken away. Read more: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/pragmatic.html#SoftwareFreedom
@amerika Yes, like international human rights law. Software freedom isn't just a right, it's a responsibility. If you write software please respect the rights of users to share, copy, modify, and use the software as they wish: https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html#softwarefreedom
GNU Linux-libre 6.1 is out! I've pushed the .deb and .rpm updates, which should become visible in a package manager near you once the mirrors sync. https://www.fsfla.org/ikiwiki/selibre/linux-libre/ This will be a long-term support (LTS) kernel but, in a change from the past, I'll leave the linux-libre-lts package tracking the 5.15 series until 6.2 comes out in February. I think this will be the general process going forward as it provides time for the newly released version to stabilize before making it LTS. #GNU#linux
The current advice for using the AGPL is "if it is likely that others will make improved versions of your program to run on servers..." But when companies like rollApp exist who say that they can take any program with a GUI & turn it into SaaSS this distinction seems to become less useful. Let's change the default recommendation to AGPL-3.0-or-later because you can never really know where or how your program is going to be used. Think of "AGPL Everywhere" as the new "HTTPS Everywhere."
Software freedom's a fundamental right we deserve as human beings. It's the right to use, study, and share software. This right is often threatened but we have the power to fight back. We can use our voices to raise awareness about software freedom, and fight for the rights of the users: https://www.fsf.org/appeal#FreedomToShare
December 10 is Human Rights Day. People continue to face discrimination, inequality, violence and persecution because of their race, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, religion, and other factors. It's important that we continue to push for a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, where human rights are protected and upheld for everyone without distinction of any kind.
Today marks the birth of Grace Hopper. Born December 9, 1906, her contributions to computers are numerous and significant. She implemented the first compiler and the term "debugging" when she removed a moth from a computer. Her work paved the way for many of the advancements in computer technology that we rely on today. She will forever be remembered as a trailblazer in the field of computer science. The ACM's Grace Murray Hopper Award is given in her honor. Learn more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Hopper
The future of software freedom is looking bright. By becoming an associate member of the Free Software Foundation, you'd be helping to grow the software sharing community and ensure that everyone has access to free software. With your help, the @fsf can reach the goal of 455 new members by December 31. What are you waiting for? Join the movement and help build a better tomorrow: https://www.fsf.org/appeal
Companies like Microsoft & Apple & etc. treat people so badly (with proprietary software, DRM, etc.) and yet are so successful, financially speaking. That seems backward. Perhaps part of it comes from people that are used to being mistreated? Maybe they're so used to this they they don't think much of it or don't think they deserve better? Maybe it's some form of Stockholm syndrome? #SoftwareFreedom
