It seems that little kids will believe almost anything. For a short while I had my friend's kids believing that french toast had to be imported directly from France.

December 1 is World AIDS Day, a day to remember those who have died from AIDS and raise awareness of the AIDS pandemic. The World Health Organization estimates that since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 80 million people have been infected with HIV, and more than 40 million have died. HIV infection is the cause of AIDS, and it's still spreading. As long as this continues AIDS will continue to claim lives.

      Rosa Parks
Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005) was an American activist in the civil rights movement best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott. The United States Congress has honored her as "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement".On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks rejected bus driver James F. Blake's order to vacate a row of four seats in the "colored" section in favor of a White passenger, once the "White" section was filled. Parks was not the first person to resist bus segregation, but the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) believed that she was the best candidate for seeing through a court challenge after her arrest for civil disobedience in violating Alabama segregation laws, and she helped inspire the Black community to boycott the Montgomery buses for over a year. The case became bogged down in the state courts, but the federal Montgomery bus lawsuit Browder v. Gayle resulted in a November 1956 decision that bus segregation is unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the...

And When Even The Death Penalty Doesn't Deter Copying -- What Then? * TorrentFreak
      from @torrentfreak
This week has seen some disturbing news. British Telecom has been sued into censoring Newzbin2, and domain seizures in the United States were motivated and justified by the flabbergasting "they can have free speech in another country if they like". In the United Kingdom, it appears that legislation to deny people basic communication and fundamental rights still move ahead. In France, the first innocent victims of such schemes are just appearing.

Given that copyright maximalists continue to push for ever greater penalties, will they one day demand the death penalty?

Back in the day (on the PDP-10) the microcode would be loaded from disk or tape, after which the main processor would then start. This let the hackers for the Incompatible Timesharing System have their own microcode version, which added more features compared to the one provided by DEC. It's too bad this ability seems to be lost on modern computers. Please bring back free microcode that can be modified as needed, and then reloaded from scratch into the CPU. :)

Richard Stallman started working at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab in the early 1970s and later started the GNU Project. With that he launched the free software movement - a social, ethical & political movement for software to be controlled by those who used it. Space-cadet keyboard
The space-cadet keyboard is a keyboard designed by John L. Kulp in 1978 and used on Lisp machines at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which inspired several still-current jargon terms in the field of computer science and influenced the design of Emacs. It was inspired by the Knight keyboard, which was developed for the Knight TV system, used with MIT's Incompatible Timesharing System. Description The space-cadet keyboard was equipped with seven modifier keys: four keys for bucky bits (⎈ Control, ◆ Meta, ...

Here's a thought for the day: You can't actually use proprietary software. You can only be used by it.

@simsa04 Wow. There's a lot in what you said that would require a lot of writing just to begin unpacking it.

It may be helpful to point to this:

Yes, things like surveillance aren't helpful but that should not be part of the software license for all of the same reasons mentioned in there.

It's not clear to me that free software should be placed as the cause of things like surveillance. Countries will find ways to accomplish their desired goals regardless of license.
