Once in a while, a movie production company sues a list of Canadian Internet users who they claim downloaded one of their movies. The law firm is always Aird & Berlis, the lead lawyer is always Kenneth Clark, and the movies are almost always bad, violent/war/assassin popcorn movies (in this case, indistinguishable from satire).

It was a pleasure to speak with @mgeist for this week's episode of his Law Bytes Podcast, giving an update about the state of telecom competition in Canada and the #CRTC's effort to address it.

Amid some dangerous and extremely disappointing statements from student organizations about Israel and Gaza, I am impressed that University of Ottawa law students from Muslim and Jewish student associations came together to make this thoughtful and united statement. While their statement leaves much unsaid, it is commendable that they focus on common ground, in shared pain and mutual respect.

Until now in #Canada, the general term of an author's #copyright persisted for 50 years after their death. As of Dec 30, that will be extended for another 20 years, even for authors whose works were about to enter the public domain. This change obvs does nothing to incentivize their art—they're already dead.

It's protectionism of authors who produced their work with expectations of shorter copyright terms, and theft from the public who were entitled to free access.
