So, Ethel Kennedy DID live to see the son named for her husband endorse not only a Republican but a Republican even former Republican presidents won’t endorse.
I missed Gus Walz last night—had to go out before Tim’s speech—but he seems so on point with this convention’s theme: Joy. What a delightful young man.
Banning a book is basically telling a kid its ideas are—prima facie—stronger than yours. That you need more time to better establish the sanctity of a less sensible ideology.
And you know you’re dealing with a culture of indoctrination when there’s an automatic assumption that reading something is the same thing as believing it.
Because they use books for the purpose of instilling ideas—not interrogating them.
I grew up in a Los Angeles of the ‘70s and ‘80s where it was very normal to have undocumented housekeepers, nannies, gardeners, etc. Because they’d work for far less than their labor’s market value.
And what’s always driven me crazy about the scapegoating—aside from the racism and ignoring how much they pay in taxes—is that it ignores HOW MUCH this country has benefited from decades and decades of exploited labor. That’s got to be a pretty big number if you add it all up.
Why isn’t he taking every opportunity—as the infinitely smarter, tougher, whiter, maler genius of statesmanship—to debate the dumb-as-a-rock Black-Asian woman who was either a DEI hire or slept her way to the top?
Any normal candidate in such an uneven matchup would want as many debates as possible.
My father isn’t a bad person. But he’s a complete narcissist committed to his carefully constructed narratives.
It’s exhausting. The sum total of our relationship has always been my choosing whether to accommodate or battle the self-centered prism through which he interacts with the world, then processing how it’s damaged me.
I’ve cut him off for years at a time. And I guess I’m saying this in case you need someone to tell you it’s okay to end ANY toxic relationship.
One of the metrics I keep thinking about is so basic—but speaks so strongly to the fundamental difference in the way each treats every American.
If there’s a disaster, we know for a fact Biden’s messaging and actions will focus solely on the welfare of its victims. We also know for a fact Trump’s messaging and actions will be entirely filtered through a focus on himself.
That’s what we’re voting for. Underlying values that inform staffing and direction of crisis management—and everything else.
And for fuck’s sake, if Joe isn’t able to do it for an entire term, Kamala can.
This election isn’t about deciding which party’s candidate will do a better job. It’s an ideological battle between democratic and undemocratic ideals from which there may be no return in our lifetimes.
Driver kinda terrifying me because he keeps his phone in a cupholder down by the gearshift and keeps looking down for extended periods of time to see where he’s supposed to be going.
Will accept thoughts and prayers even if they’re useless.
My favorite thing about prayer is that if something goes your way, God did something good for you he wouldn’t have maybe otherwise done. And if something doesn’t go your way, he’s not doing something good for you because reasons but you don’t know what they are. Amazing system!
Hollywood liberal, Bollinger bolshevik, choose your favorite pejorative. Turn-ons include film/TV, music, civil rights, architecture, cars, travel, food, gin martinis. Turn-offs include broccoli and spectacularly awful people like a few billionaires who come to mind.
