@InfiniteHench I disagree with the linked article on a key point:

Manufacturers aren't locked in to ship Windows until current SteamOS versions get released. There are many other Linux distributions, some of them nearly identical to SteamOS, like Bazzite.

Manufacturers intentionally choose to ship Windows.

@chrastecky @InfiniteHench I'd go even further and claim "any distro that isn't just a single-person hobby project is fine".

I'd suggest to rather pick a distribution that's well maintained and has a large user-base.

For trying out Linux I'd probably suggest Linux Mint. It's a good compromise between ease of use and quality, and of course Steam (and Steam Play Proton) runs perfectly fine on it.

@gamingonlinux As dumb as it sounds, some parts of the web are way more enjoyable with text-only browsers.

Of course there are also plenty of websites that don't work in text-only browsers - or, in other words, that give the middle finger to visually impaired users.

@aeva @technomancy Honestly though: If one doesn't need to change audio outputs frequently, ALSA (with dmix because modern sound chips don't do hardware mixing for reasons) is perfectly fine.
