The main thing I’ve been doing in this regard is trying to get my institutions (my pop center and department; another good goal would be our various professional orgs) to set up accounts here, even if it’s just a mirror of their Twitter at the moment. The lack of our institutions here seems highly relevant to whether the network can become dense enough.

@strypey @rolle I guess our experiences were very different! My Twitter count was the perfect size for me on that platform (~7,000 followers: big enough to have really interesting conversations in a setting where an algorithm shows you to followers’ followers; small enough that I almost never had random trolls pop up). I really want this place to work but I’ve had a lot of challenge getting anywhere near the same level of interesting exchange here. 🤷🏻♀️ It’s so hard to find the posts I want too!

@feditips I’d like to be able to go in the opposite direction! But also, why can’t you change something to private and people who’ve already replied will lose access to the post they replied to, but not their own comment?

@feditips Is there a way to change visibility after the fact? I haven’t been able to edit past posts in this one respect.

@joshix @feditips I’d click one single link. At no point would I copy a url, then go to a different site with a few clicks and paste that URL into that site’s search function.

@feditips This is *exactly* what makes this a not-very-user-friendly social media experience for anyone who wants to interact with more than one self-contained community…

Hundreds of words in this essay on the problems AI poses for college professors, but not a word on how class sizes shape the context of assignments and grading. (I’d write very different assignments if I had a lot fewer students, and I would *know my students* well enough to have some context for what they turned in.)
