GOP sneaks decade-long AI regulation ban into spending bill

    arstechnica.com/ai/2025/05/gop…

On Sunday night, House Republicans added language to the Budget Reconciliation bill that would block all state and local governments from regulating AI for 10 years, 404 Media reports. The provision, introduced by Representative Brett Guthrie of Kentucky, states that "no State or political subdivision thereof may enforce any law or regulation regulating artificial intelligence models, artificial intelligence systems, or automated decision systems during the 10 year period beginning on the date of the enactment of this Act."\
    \
The broad wording of the proposal would prevent states from enforcing both existing and proposed laws designed to protect citizens from AI systems. For example, California's recent law requiring health care providers to disclose when they use generative AI to communicate with patients would potentially become unenforceable. New York's 2021 law mandating bias audits for AI tools used in hiring decisions would also be affected, 404 Media notes. The measure would also halt legislation set to take effect in 2026 in California that requires AI developers to publicly document the data used to train their models.

    ♲ @mkwadee@diasp.eu:♲ @joerg_fliege@diaspora.glasswings.com:
I suppose this is what Brexiters wanted:
Polish woman, 80, faces deportation from UK after mistakenly filling in form onlineElzbieta Olszewska, 80, had been living alone in her flat in Warsaw before arriving in the UK last September. Her only child, Michal Olszewski, 52, an aeronautical engineer who lives in Lincoln with his wife, had been travelling regularly to the Polish capital to support her.
Olszewski has been living in the UK since 2006, initially as a EU citizen. He subsequently became a British citizen and has dual Polish-UK nationality. As his mother has become increasingly frail he wanted her to move to the UK so he and his wife could care for her properly. There is a legal route under the settlement scheme for people in Olszewski’s situation to bring parents to the UK.

Olszewska arrived in the UK last September on a six-month visitor visa and shortly afterwards the application, containing all the correct information, was made for her to live permanently in Britain with her son and his wife.

Which was then promptly rejected. Well, not promptly, but after six months of waiting time.

The rejection letter went on to say: “The required application process for someone applying as a family member of a relevant naturalised British citizen is to use the appropriate paper form. Your application was made online. There is no right of appeal in respect of an invalid application.” The rejection letter informed Olszewska that she did not have the right to be in the UK as her visitor visa had expired and that the consequences of staying unlawfully included being detained, fined, imprisoned, along with being removed and banned from returning to the UK.
The paper form of an application to stay must be requested from the Home Office which prints the person’s name on it and then sends it by email to the applicant, who must print it out, fill it in and post it back to the Home Office. The Home Office has said it is moving its immigration system online.

I dont think ive ever heard a #parent regret not having their #children sooner. They may have wished they were in the Financial position to have #kids sooner but I've heard way way more parents wish they had waited or realize that had they known what we know now they probably wouldn't have chosen to be parents.

    A quotation from Teddy Roosevelt
That is why I decline to recognize the mere multimillionaire, the man of mere wealth, as an asset of value to any country, and especially as not an asset to my own country. If he has earned or uses his wealth in a way that makes him of real benefit, of real use — and such is often the case — why, then he does become an asset of worth. But it is the way in which it has been earned or used, and not the mere fact of wealth, that entitles him to the credit.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) American politician, statesman, conservationist, writer, US President (1901-1909)
Speech (1910-04-23), “Citizenship in a Republic [The Man in the Arena],” Sorbonne, Paris

One of the things the 2024 loss did was to show me that my political communication strategy was all wrong and old fashioned and had little influence on anyone. I put so much effort into it and thought it was so important just to lose everything and what for? I will still try to communicate but not at the expense of burnout, but i will be much more selective as to where the message will spread better. Algorithms make many older great platforms absolutely worthless for spreading any ideas.

@bronakins @Pineywoozle @timo21 I agree but for having nearly $1B of campaign spending one would think that we could hire better strategists. I think her biggest flaw was not continuing to do or say big things that grabbed headlines. When she did it looked like there was no way she would lose and you heard nothing about Trump but after a certain point there was something of a vacuum from Sep - election day and Trump filled it in the news because he's made perfectly for 24 hour news.

@notclacke I think they believe the bubbling might cause things to break up better via mechanical force. Also the heat might help or melt. I can't imagine it being so extreme though that it causes damage, it's not like you dumped pure lye down the drain. The pH is fairly low. Also many drain cleaners are acids that are meant to break down hair.

    #overpopulation #PopulationCollapse
Every #billionaire who has ever screamed about over or under population. WERE THEMSELVES THE CAUSE!
Want more babies? Pay people more.
Want less babies? Increase #education especially for women, make #healthcare free, make family planning free.

Worried there are not enough resources and #climatechange is going to kill us? The top 1% produce 29% of all #greenhousegasses , the bottom billion produce 1%. Invest in science to create a green revolution.

They are sounding the alarm about problems they created and blaming the average individual with no power as being selfish.
