Pair of Keens trail shoes wore out, the heel tread worn down on one side.

I was wondering if I could add new tread?

Went into a bike store, asked for a big discarded tire. They found me a huge 27.5 x 4 e-bike tire.

Took it home, cut the remaining tread off my shoe heels, scrubbed them clean, slopped a layer of contact cement on, let it get tacky, then clamped on cut-to-shape bike tire sections.

Going to fill the gaps with black Shoe Goo glue.

Will it hold? We'll see!

Family back to full covid protocol.

Spouse tested positive today.

Rest of us negative, so far.

Weekend plans destroyed, we don't dare visit family, my evening a mess, and I'll have to call sick tomorrow 'cause I am exhausted.

Our covid protocol is this:

Sick person isolates, rests, gets Paxlovid ASAP, masks when out of room. Everyone masks. Inform contacts. Box fans in windows make positive pressure area, so air flows into sickroom and out window. Periodic RAT tests.

Slept out on couch, fan roaring in window, pushing air into the house.

Tray table in sickroom, another outside door for food delivery.

Cats are very confused.

Hassling kids to retest #covid RATs this morning, so we can choose school, morning train, or sickroom for them.

Maybe this morning, after getting kids off, I'll stay out to give my sick spouse run of the house for some hours?

Yeah, this sucks.

And this is the better path.

Although I totally didn't need one, I bought a slide rule.

I had one as a kid, but didn't really figure out how it worked. Maybe a half century later, I can give it another try?

In Morro Bay, on vacation, took a morning walk while family slept in.

Peeked in Dolly's Donuts.

"No bathroom for customers? But you sell coffee! That's just wrong."

Wandering back, stopped in the thrift store, "The Good Flea", found 1980s HP-12C calculator for $1.

Needs batteries. Whatever is modern equiv of LR44?

"Oh, you can get those at Radio Shack! Why, yes, we still have one, up on Quintana."

So that's where I went next.

Raccoons need to haul cargo, though.

A small electric truck might serve them better.

3 years back, teacher acquaintance said to me,

"School district IT won't support old classroom laptops, so they are all going to e-waste. Trash! Want one?"

Brought wagon, filled it, and I took them all.

Sorted, tested, labeled, figured out which still worked, stored them.

Now, younger childbeast tells me,

"My friends are tired of Windows, and want to learn Linux. Can we set them up?"

So, loading laptops last night, getting them ready for new homes.

Go, kids, go!

Out mowing the yard, I saw a guy go past, slow, turn his motorcycle around, come back. He stopped, asked if it was our bookbox by the sidewalk.

"Hope so, it's in our yard. Yes."

"I got a book out of there, and OMG, I couldn't put it down! It was 'Red Notice', by Bill Browder."

"I'm glad you enjoyed it. That's good."

I went inside, found a related book, "Red Mafia", brought it out and gave it to him.

It felt good, to know that some of our efforts are working, you know?

Someone oughta get that! If nothing else...

My kid recently used our sad $40 reflector telescope we had grabbed off the curb, to totally "stone soup" a star party.

He announced a star party, set up in the park with snacks and the scope.

Soon enough, someone in the neighborhood hauled their much better computerized telescope to the park, and began showing neighbors things in the sky! Families with kids came by.

Stone soup. I'm telling ya.

One ex-coworker mentioned some years after the 2001 #dotcom crash, that his 3 years at the startup wound up costing him $30k/year. Because he had been taxed on the nominal value of the #stock granted to him, even though the share price had collapsed before he had been able to sell.

Could be worse. Papers said some guy killed himself around then, freaked out about his imaginary wealth magically turning to devastating debt.

Maybe the law changed since?

Dunno. I'm a workaday joe now.

I sit on the couch, sipping espresso, legs folded, carefully doing nothing.

Morning. Quiet. Everyone else still asleep

On my lap sits our small elderly tortie cat.

This is our time together.

It's so calm and full of gentle love.

A while back, someone was talking about how sometimes software talks to software through an API, perhaps with versions, so one system can talk to another in an agreed-upon negotiated manner.

"Oh, you want to talk version 3? Quite alright, no problem! I speak that version still!"

Then this person asked why our User Interfaces aren't all like that, allowing us to choose how we interact.
