Sure there are some things worse than waiting around for DNS changes to propagate. But right now, waiting for DNS changes to propagate is the absolute worst.
@lunarloony Yeah I feel like the ribbon paradigm is largely to blame for this issue. Unfortunately it's an all-or-nothing setting. You either see Everything or Nothing (if you collapse the ribbon). I remember spending time customizing my toolbars in Win 9x versions of Office and that was super powerful. I feel like that choice has been taken away from us largely. (Though I'll bet a terrible version of it still exists if I looked hard enough)
Here is Windows 9x and Word 9x at 800x600 resolution. Spacious. Comfy. Super Usable.
Here is a modern Word replaced (TextMaker from Softmaker) in an 800x600 window. Barely usable. Editing space is eaten up by TONs of GUI elements. text is hard to read. SMH
Finally have 3 displays set up for working from home. I have these vague memories, as if from some previous life, of using a computer productively with only a single display. How... how did we ever do that?
Replaced 2 very failed capacitors but still dead as a door nail. Off to the ewaste with this one. Already missing all the key caps - that alone makes it pretty speedy to restore. I'll save a few parts but, yeah, this one's a gone-er.
@rose_alibi How about we just use #stopmakingshittysoftware instead? For me, that's basically what it boils down to. Very few computing devices actually stop working - they stop "being supported" by the software.
Okay. $dayjob has gotten to the point where I need to do something about it.
I'm officially looking for other opportunities in the sysadmin/IT/devops/etc space. I've been a linux/unix sysadmin generalist for ~20 years now and I'd like to apply my considerable skills and experience to the aid of some organization seeking to do good things in the world.
Open to both remote positions but also to relocation in the U.S. (Currently based in Central Virginia) I enjoy having my hands on hardware and fixing problems. And, of course, I'll bring all the retro gaming nerdery with me.
@MLE_online Apparently it's slightly old. American Eagle, but not sold anymore. It was a tagless tee so if the writing is gone I'm guessing its ~10 years. I see them for sale in various used clothing sites. Why did I dive down this rabbit hole? No idea.

Okay, you may all unleash the "I told you so!"s. After declaring classic Macs to be out-of-scope for my collection, and giving away all of my Mac accessories in ~2021, I now find myself the custodian of a Mac LC II. I wonder if I still have any of those Mac-to-VGA adapters hidden away in a box somewhere...
Okay I'm definitely getting sick. Not sure how or what it is but I can feel it.
I'm going to attempt to drink what feels like 1000 liters of tea and ...oh what the hell... let's just buy a copy of Half Life on Windows 10 so I can play it again instead of trying to get my ancient pirated copy working on the retro PC.
I can't move to the Fediverse properly until I reproduce my famous pinned post from the birdsite, so here it is:
P.S.A. To all vintage computer and video game collectors:
Go through your collections and GET THE DAMN BATTERIES OUT!
Now! Don't wait! Seriously, put down the phone, go to your collection and take out all the batteries. Right now! Even if they look "okay" they are NOT SAFE after this much time.
