Not one conservative in a thousand understands this.

I'm being interviewed today by a staff writer from The New Yorker. On preparation for the destabilization I see coming, first in politics but also in (probable) ecological collapse.

I read several of the man's columns to prepare; he is bright and seems sane. I have no particular faith that the article produced will be what I would want; as is usually the case, the writer seems to be a liberal, but his publication's owners are oligarchs, likely worth somewhere in excess of 20 billion dollars.

"That happens." "You're OK."

When kids are little, they don't know what matters. They look to adults to know how to respond.

When your kid falls, unless they're hurt, you say, "You're OK," dust them off, and send them back to play. If you fuss, they'll fuss.

If they break something accidentally, you teach them how to clean it up, and you say, "That happens. You'll be more careful next time." It's just an accident.

You can see the parents getting this right. Their kids are confident.

Exit polling has the Tories getting hammered in the UK. Looks to be a good night for the Left.

The massed might of the world's oligarchs is about to be aimed at that country.

Tories are fascists, just like Republicans. But they haven't yet subverted free elections there.

We lose in America in '24, there won't be another free election in this country.

Joe Biden is boring and normal. (And a good President, every way that matters.) Almost all news media has suffered financially because of it, declining ratings and readers.

They're not afraid of Trump. They're not currying favor when they treat him with kid gloves.

They're actively on his side, and want him back.

How most recipes sound to me:

Put large tortilla in pan greased with olive oil. Turn on low heat. Add four eggs, beat the eggs. Ruin with diced white onion. Dice and add cherry tomatoes. Ruin further with chopped green onions.

Bake. Add cheese, bake some more at high temperature to brown the cheese.

Sprinkle with diced parsley, and to finish, ruin with chives.

I made a mildly critical comment a while back about Isaac Asimov, and got asked incredulously, did I think I was a better writer than Asimov?

I won't dodge: yes.

But lots of writers were better writers than Asimov, even during his day. His text was clumsy, his plots creaked.

But no one read Asimov for that.

This is seven years old. But I don't think the principle has changed.

After 2000, *lots* of people sneered that the Y2K bug had been a big nothing, massively overhyped.

They were idiots. If the vast amount of Y2K remediation that took place hadn't, planes might well have fallen from the sky, nuclear power plants might well have melted down. I worked on two projects myself to fix bad 2 digit dates.

We get to the other side of the current Nazi infestation, the same idiots are going to say, "See, you were just hysterical."

Youngest just got his first real job, $50 an hour, part time. Programming math.

The part time is important, he's still got his finals to get through before graduating.

I've been carrying a mountain on my back for decades. It's down to a little bag of rocks.

There's a particular flavor of liberalism that depends on being ignorant of the things you opine about. I was more racist when I was younger -- I lived in Pomona with a bunch of black people and they frequently annoyed me. I was *also* more intolerant of poor white people, and I've gotten better about that too.

Outside of occasional charity work, I don't deal with poor people on a day to day basis any longer. The black people I associate with regularly are successful. It's a lot easier to be a nice liberal when people aren't pissing you off with their traumas, associated with poverty and discrimination. But it's not particularly praiseworthy.

This is nice.

I love those videos where a guy cooks a big meal -- bread, steak, veggies, tea -- in the wilderness, with nothing but a knife, tea kettle, and a big flat rock.

... And the $50,000 vehicle that brought him to the wilderness, and ten grand of video editing equipment, and an entire global trade system that brought him his spices and oils and meats and veggies...

People watching that thing thinking, I'll be ok when civilization fails, I know where there's a flat rock.

@AnarchoNinaWrites You know what Jews and trans people have in common? Jews were in the 1930s and trans people are today about 1% of the population. A small enough group that they not only were no danger to the fascists, but were powerless enough to be an easy target. The choice wasn't accidental in either case.

I never did make a living writing, though I may make a retirement out of it.

Just in the future, if people could avoid telling me they love my books, they've pirated all of them, that would be great.

I'm not even telling you to stop pirating. The world is unfair, you do what you have to.

But let's let it be a secret where I'm concerned.

I've posted this before, but every now and again it's worth revisiting. The media is owned by people who want you dead if you're not producing for them.

There is no demographic more prone to pedophilia than religious men with even the slightest amount of power over others.
