Anyone, at any scale, who nurtures a cult of personality around them is suspect. High school teachers, pastors, writers, actors, whoever. If they're actively cultivating a bunch of people who think they're wonderful I always assume it's because they're secretly terrible.

A small thing you can do to make the world better is to support an independent artist. Buy something on Etsy. Buy a book direct from an independent publisher or author. Buy music on Bandcamp. Go to an event and buy stuff. You'll be helping non-corporate art to survive.
