I recently realized that a lot of the accusations of #solarpunk as drama-less, boring #utopia might stem from a simple misunderstanding:

Solarpunk's hard-won #hope makes sense only in the context of the #ClimateChange #trauma , acknowledging it and processing it, with the bright colors contrasting with the despair all around it.

To talk about Solarpunk we need to talk about the coming changes especially if they terrify us.

Otherwise the term has no meaning.

This is why a lot of our @SolarpunkPrompts are set against an otherwise dystopian, cataclysmic scenery - we need to see the hope in the refugee camps and among people fighting pandemics.

Dreaming about sustainable cities of tomorrow with no set path towards them is no different than reading a fairy tale.

It entertains, but hardly inspires to take any action, to believe that today's struggle makes any sense.

I want stories which inspire, which allow us to applaud our daily sacrifices.

Think about it: we are about to have a hard century and there is simply no way of "fixing" the planet climate in our lifetimes.

The best we can do is to create a new shape of civilization which will set a stable course towards sustainability and keep it there for decades, if not centuries.

We are planting trees we know we won't see becoming forests within our lifespans.

We need to see our struggle as a context for this better world.

Otherwise it's just escapism into a fairy tale.

Do the #writing or #publishing Mastodon have any idea for a #magazine or a portal that would be interested in my #review of #kimStanleyRobinson 's "Ministry for the Future" ?

I already published it on my blog last year, but I'd like to start a wider discussion about the book and the way it portrays some themes.

It's in English 8000 words with multiple quoted passages. I'm not looking for any royalties, just want to spread the word.

I was today years old when I learned that companies now want to manipulate #LLM datasets to inject ads into them and monitor their brand standing in #ChatGPT and other models live.

I don't think I understood #capitalism enough to work with #futurism .

Correct me if I'm reading this wrong, but

We are normalizing dataset poisoning and obfuscation as an industry, so that companies will be able to covertly change the LLM's behavior.

More and more people use LLMs instead of algorithmic search engines (consciously or not).

What if someone injects alternate history? No Taiwan? No Holocaust?

What if the open source models that people can afford to build on will be poisoned like that, and so their dictionaries and assistants will spew propaganda?

I think that it doesn't get repeated often enough:

#ClimateChange protests can get people's attention, but cannot sustain it.

Only new narratives and visions of sustainable futures on societal scale can make people think about alternatives for a longer while. Consider them possible.

Like #solarpunk .

We need to make a sustainable, just world imaginable, otherwise each new protest, no matter how loud, will just fizzle out and be forgotten.

Someone has recently defined my flavor of #solarpunk as "a package of measures to deal with crises" and I've been thinking about it ever since.

As much as I don't think it describes everything I stand for, I think it's a good summary.

We need to start imagining not a distant, perfect utopia, but a way of getting ourselves out of the problems we have now. Most of these are caused by lack of imagination, cultural templates for working together etc.
