@alex Newb question: Are the Docs here https://docs.soapbox.pub/ for #SoapBox applicable to a very recent install that followed the install page https://soapbox.pub/install/ with Rebased? I was looking for info on how to best perform updates and backups, but some of that info looks to be for other types of SoapBox installs.
Character counts... Really? Well Indie, that's why I recommend that people get off of mastodon and onto something else like #Friendica or #SoapBox - #Fediverse is Fediverse and it's only the UI and the feature sets that differentiate between the various platforms.
I'mma leave you with a big list to peruse and explore. I gather you're a bonafide gearhead, otherwise you prolly wouldn't have stood up your own "mastopub" server ;)
I ran a small mastodon server a few years back, with about 1200 users. Took me a year to get everyone off of it so I could move to Pleroma at the time v1.0 was released. Everyone still supported OStatus at that time.
Haven't checked your IP so I dunno if you're using a managed hosting provider or if you're self-hosting, either way, good going ?
In the list below, there's a fully managed hosting service that does Soapbox, 5000 character count limits out of the box and you can change to whatever you like in your admin panel.
If you're self-hosting, then when you upgrade, know that you can switch to one of the more forward thinking mastodon forks with higher character count limits. I dunno which is which, I don't follow mastodon anymore.
So you say your self-employed, what sort of work if you don't mind me asking?
And my fav Bible verse of all time is Lev 19:10. What's yours, if you have one in particular?
You also say that you haven't celebrated Christmas in 20 years. Are you Jehovah Witness?
Yeah, maybe too personal of questions there, but I'm generally impressed when folks run their own instances, and your profile gives s join date of August, so that's well prior to all the shenanigan people fleeing positive changes over on that deprecated legacy silo. I typically lump them in withc the y2k chicken littles that thought elevators would stop working on 01 Jan 2000, lolz.
But no judgement there, yeah, well maybe a little ?
Well, at the risk of having bored you to death already, I'll close now, hoping to be afforded the favor of your reply.
Here's that list. I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Hello Alex, I have a question about Soapbox. I hope you can help me. Currently I have Pleroma 2.4.4 installed. Here I have the problem that older posts from other instances are not loaded. Is there this problem with rebase / soapbox also? Is there a possibility to switch from Pleroma to Rebase? Unfortunately I have not found any instructions for this. Many greetings
Without further ado, here's a list of all the most prominent #Fediverse server platforms in operation.
Choosing from the list below, you can join existing instances, self-host your own, and when have a professional #hosting_provider do it for your - just pick a #turnkey provider where in just a couple of clicks your new fully managed Fediverse server will be online in only a minute or two!
@alex Can you please advise what's the best way to find out user counts on #Soapbox? Also, how to disable/enable new account creation on an instance that runs #Pleroma with #Soapbox?
@margio@margio.de#soapbox it's the active fork of almost sleeping #pleroma this is the most convenient #activitypub in term of resources cpu/mem If you want more convenient on features (enjoyable when it's a community) so, #misskey is the choice. Beware, it's completely different compared to the other
I actually think a couple of folks have indicated they've opted for the SaaS offering, which is kewl, they people have a turnkey solution for deploying a Soapbox Fediverse instance.
Oh, one of those posts I've just boosted includes a question about where the user can find their Admin section, in addition to config. @graf@pasture you might want to add the URL for customers to reach their admin section into your knowledgebase area as well (i.e., hostname.tld/pleroma/admin/) as I had to tell a couple of folks that either subscribed with you or self-hosted a Soapbox/Rebased instance for themselves.
Anyway, there needs to be more active marketing and promotion of these Soapbox related links posted into Twatter space because msdtodon is but one Fediverse server solution, and people have even asked need for Fediverse solutions for writers and journalists too, so Soapbox, #Friendica, #Mitra, and Write. As are the most viable platforms for these folks, msdtodon not even coming close to meeting the requirements necessary for professional writers.
It's nice that #Mastodon is getting all this new attention. Just wanted to remind everyone that there's more than just Mastodon on the Fediverse.
I wanted to setup a single-user instance on the Fediverse, but did not want to deal with the involved Mastodon install (which I've done a while ago). I found Soapbox with Rebased as the back-end and used that. The setup was super simple, it runs well on a low resource machine and the UI is fantastic.
@SpaccCraft@almi05 se fate una mono istanza ci sta alla grande. Però mastodon, lo dice la parola, non è la scelta migliore. Il più performante è #soapbox#rebased, fork di Pleroma. Lo stesso di https://orwell.fun
@ant@livellosegreto.it remember this are opensource project. So everyone can contribute with own knowledge. Not only developers makes projects big, also other experts can contribute. This isn't (yet) commercial territory. It's valid for every #fediverse#instance. #misskey, #soapbox#gnusocial etc.. So if you're able to contribute, just push your effort actively, don't be passive. Passivity is a bad habit invented by commercial companies to control and addict their "users"
I'm not sure whether the #Soapbox front-end can be used with #GNU_Social. #Pleroma started out as a front-end for #GS, as #Qvitter started falling behind. So even though #PleromaFE currently doesn't support GS, it may be possible to go back to when support was removed and re-add it.
I'm unable to locate the settings in #Rebased#Soapbox to add new #crypto coins and associated #explorer to the existing list. Couldn't find any documentation either. What's the best way to modify and add to the current list? @alex@gleasonator.com
Does #Rebased#Soapbox have internal point system (see screenshot)? Users can gain or lose points with specific actions on the #fediverse along with widget showing active point leaders. Thoughts on this @alex@gleasonator.com
Last I checked, it was a #SoapBox frontend (pretty fricken' kewl), but no web access (WTF is sup wit dat, bitches?), And so I was unable to create an account.
And although there was an #Apple ? app, no such #Android beast.
Is that correct? And what kind of goofy logic is that where you can only access the site if you have an #iPhone?
I suppose i would have tried to use #Fedilab, i would suppose, but you need to already have an account to do that.
I know I'm not "missing out" on anything, but What am I missing here?
