    On 10 March 2021, I had only just fallen asleep when my phone started buzzing. Then another notification, and another. In a matter of minutes, 142 of my servers went up in the clouds. And not the cloud-computing kind.

    Most of them were physically going up in a column of smoke in Strasbourg.

    My wife looked at me and asked if I wanted a coffee. I nodded. It was going to be a very long day.

    At EuroBSDCon 2026, I won't be giving a theoretical lecture on high availability. Instead, I’m going to tell the raw story of that night: the emergency recovery, the architectural choices that actually saved us, and the ones that crumbled under pressure (because we rarely talk about what fails).

    Most of all, I’ll explain why that night changed my perspective, and why I’ve come to see BSD systems not just as operating systems, but as essential, practical tools for building simpler, more resilient infrastructure.

    The official schedule is now live. If you want to hear a real-world post-mortem, join me on Saturday, 12 Sept at 11:15 (Room D.0.02).

    EuroBSDCon Full schedule: https://events.eurobsdcon.org/2026/schedule/
    See you there! ☕️

    🔔 Big news from the BSD world!

    FreeBSD and DragonFly BSD are reuniting!

    The new unified system will be called FreeBSDragon — and the first release (FreeBSDragon-1.0) is planned before the end of 2026!

    The new combined mascot artwork is almost ready and looks absolutely awesome ❤️

    #RUNBSD! But BoxyBSD now also starts to support #Linux! We're starting soon with the Linux support for already present users, offering free boxes:

    * #AlmaLinux
    * #Alpine
    * #Debian
    * #Devuan
    * #CentOS
    * #Fedora
    * #Gentoo
    * #OpenSuse
    * #OpenEuler
    * #RockyLinux

    Just next to our core OS like #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD, #MidnightBSD and #DragonflyBSD (and #illumos). This should also make the step easier to compare and test different scenarios where BSD provides a different behavior compared to Linux systems.

    Thanks to @gyptazy for the implementation!

    Or if not which #BSD is good and 'stable' for everyday use.

    I'm pleased to announce that my company, Prodottoinrete Group SRL, will be a BRONZE SPONSOR of EuroBSDCon 2025.

    The organizers do a great job managing everything, and the least we can do is offer a (small) contribution to help the conference maintain the current standards, which, in my opinion, are extremely high.

    So, a big thank you to the organizers, the speakers, and everyone who contributes to making this event so great.

    About a month ago, while talking with a colleague who had experience only with Linux, he mentioned that he knew of the BSDs but had never "had the courage" to try them. I suggested he give them a shot, reminding him not to think of BSDs as "just another Linux" but as entirely different operating systems. Focusing on security, I recommended OpenBSD - also mentioning HardenedBSD, sure it would pique his interest.

    A few hours ago, he called me about something else and confirmed that for weeks now, he's been using OpenBSD on his laptop (disk encrypted), FreeBSD on two servers, and NetBSD on an embedded device at home. He plans to experiment with HardenedBSD and DragonflyBSD in the coming weeks.

    However, he did have one complaint: we've known each other for five years, and I never encouraged him to try this earlier! 😀

    I just launched the new @BoxyBSD self-service portal where you can finally manage your BSD based box instances on your own - and I really love this minimalistic and terminal alike design.

    The installer currently supports #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD, #DragonflyBSD, #MidnightBSD and also #Illumos (#OpenSolaris).

    Have fun and #RUNBSD!

    Woooow! At @BoxyBSD we provisioned our 500th free VPS instance this weekend. Providing you guys free VPS instances with your favorite BSD based system of choice - #FreeBSD, #NetBSD, #OpenBSD, #DragonflyBSD, #MidnightBSD and also other ones or even #Illumos for our #Solars friends and somehow I'm a little bit proud!

    Happy to see that this project provides a huge value to the #opensource community, users, projects and especially for #BSD projects. #RUNBSD with #BoxyBSD!

    What's the best OS for a server? https://mastodon.social/@geerlingguy/112311377807798463

    It depends on what you're doing with it, but I'd say #Devuan and its parent #Debian should be near the top of your list. I'd also consider #FreeBSD and #DragonflyBSD.

    I know that "Debian" is an ancient Sumerian word meaning "old", but when I used the former #CentOS bug-for-bug clone of #Red_Hat #RHEL, its packages were even older. I had to find 3rd party repos that had more-current versions of various libraries and applications. (Examples: I neded newer versions of PHP, php-intl, the internationalization library that php-intl depends upon in order to run almost anything because RHEL freezes the major versions of such software for years.)

    Which makes sense when you're paying for stability ... you probably aren't installing current versions of $APPLICATION, so the language in which it is written probably needs to stay old, just with security patches.
