Lately I've been looking for a reason (or just an excuse) to run #Debian on my desktop instead of #Fedora . But Fedora is just so good, that I'm not finding one.
Did you know that 'Salsa', the name of our GitLab development platform was chosen at a restaurant in Hamburg? Written prominently on the menu the connection between sauce/source was realized. #debian
Email received a few days ago: "We need to know which version of SSH is installed on the server, as we want to ensure it is not vulnerable to external attacks." My response: "Don’t worry, SSH is accessible ONLY via VPN, and I am the only one with access to that VPN—activated only when needed—so there is no way for there to be any issues, regardless of the version used."
Email received this morning: "We’re not interested; you must provide the SSH version installed and, if it's not the latest, ensure us of the update date." My response: "Sorry, could you explain the rationale? SSH is not exposed, it’s not listening on any public IP." Their reply: "Provide the version." My response: "OpenSSH_9.7, LibreSSL 3.9.0, on OpenBSD." Their reply: "This is not considered secure. It must be OpenSSH_9.2p1 Debian-2+deb12u3." My response: "It’s not Debian; it’s OpenBSD." Their reply: "So the systems are insecure."
So, in light of the #Crowdstrike issue today, it keeps me wondering, will #Windows be ready for the desktop soon? Will 2024 be the year of Windows on the desktop, or should I just keep running #Debian like I have done since 1997?
We started out with an aim to package gitlab as a native package in #debian. We managed to get a single version in debian stable, but could not keep it updated since upstream provides security updates only for 3 months and Debian stable releases needs to be supported for around 2 years.
Since the nodejs dependencies grew exponentially, we had to move gitlab to contrib section from main.
It turns out this time its not even a bug, it is intended behaviour! #Element apparently simply doesn't support #Firefox ESR, which is what I use on #Debian, so I guess I just won't use #Matrix on my laptop anymore.
One of the devs argues they cannot support a browser release that is one year old. Why are modern developers so scared of stable software? Why does everything need to be new and changed? It's so dumb...
