There are a ton of feral cats, eagles, hawks, etc. around, and I can only imagine that in a SHTF scenario that I wouldn't be the only one thinking about releasing or eating certain animals. A dog is a like a family member, and it can survive for a long time on small food compared to a human while also being a useful guard and deterrent. A cat can protect your food stores and living space from rodents which bring disease and other issues, but you can't easily silence a cat nor use it for proper protection. Between the two, the cat would have to go first. Honestly I hate thinking about this concept, but I'm just being realistic.
