@Paradox@raru.re @julia@eepy.moe most if not all domains are sponsored by a separate entity, and when that entity dies it is sort of a question mark what happens.
like .fox is owned by the fox businesses, if they were to cease to exist the domain would remain without sponsor and likely vanish. same w/ google and .dev
the thing you're suggesting is that IANA sponsors it instead like general purpose TLDs but they've already stated they won't ever be doing that again
