Hitler himself was a fan of the aphorism that history is written by the victors; it is difficult to have it both ways.

I've heard plenty of attempts to minimize wartime atrocities (and in his case, interbellum also); it becomes easy to write off "actually, the sky has never been blue" if you hear it enough times. And some historians on the other side like to insist that the sky is always blue, never grey or black, and I've seen too many instances of those historians exaggerations used to insist that the sky is *never* blue. Schenk, Bach-Zelewski, Fegelein, Himmler all had roughly the same estimation of the guy, and they were not owned by the Allies: they were all Nazis that knew him personally. The Polish soldiers singled him out and tortured him to death, and I can make my inferences from there.
