I'm pretty sure the vitamin D thing is confirmed and there's evidence the earliest hunter gather populations in northern europe had dark skin as well so light skin is most likely an adaptation to a combination of less sunlight (so less need for sun protection) and a changed diet due to the advent of agriculture.
This also explains why the populations with the lightest skin are from the temperate parts of europe and asia while the indigenous people of north america, where agriculture was much less widespread, have darker skin
