And a system only needs to be as complete as needed. My accounting is far too simple to use quickbook. I have a lot of transactions (time entries / advanced costs), but may only have a handful of invoices / clients month to month.

So my approach is to keep the data thin, and allow the tools at my disposal to produce reports, etc, when needed. The only real strict / regulated compliance I have is trust accounting. I have a script that reconciles those accounts and prints the required reports each month.
