India was known as Hindustan at the time. Best reckoning for where the moniker "Indians" come from is Columbus's phrase to describe them as "a people in God." The 'in God' part, in the original language, is "in dios."
In dios becomes Indian.
(Very much the same way that Kong Fu Xi became Confucius.)
