India was known as Hindustan at the time. Best reckoning for where the moniker "Indians" come from is Columbus's phrase to describe them as "a people in God." The 'in God' part, in the original language, is "in dios."
In dios becomes Indian.

And thus a good time for Pete was ruined because of an Italian explorer dead 267 years prior who believed in dead reckoning and a world with two fewer continents.
