My kid is a toddler, so we're not even in the territory of phones being a thing anytime soon, but we're also not getting a tablet and we're introducing them to computers via keyboard and mouse. I just don't think throwing smartphones and tablets at children is a good way to encourage digital literacy in general, even setting aside the safety/privacy issues.
