@Lydie @r_alb exactly. Children (especially young children) don't need smartphones.

@stellarsarah @Lydie @r_alb While they don't need them .. they will get them at some point.
Instead of protecting them blindly, teach them what the actual dangers are. Help them to become individuals, with values and methods to reason about dangers.
They will get a phone at some point, there is not reason to deny what will eventually will happen...

@stellarsarah I got a 5 and 8 year old. No tablets, no phones, not even computers (and this is from someone who started programming at 6 -- we did not have Internet then).
I'm currently struggling with letting my eldest playing games, programming ... the issue is not the computer, but the "Internet". Parenthood is not to make it easy for the parents.

@amszmidt @Lydie @r_alb they can get them as adults with their own money.
My kid is a toddler, so we're not even in the territory of phones being a thing anytime soon, but we're also not getting a tablet and we're introducing them to computers via keyboard and mouse. I just don't think throwing smartphones and tablets at children is a good way to encourage digital literacy in general, even setting aside the safety/privacy issues.

@stellarsarah That seems like a big difference, they will get there no matter when .. and sooner than you might want.

@amszmidt @Lydie @r_alb yeah, there's so much on the internet that's unsuitable for children. I don't think I'm letting mine online for quite a while.

@stellarsarah I try to teach my kids about things first, together, talking about the dangers, and I suppose reality ... to the point where there is no worry about letting them loose on the Internet, or some other things.
Sorta like teaching someone how to use a knife .. the goal is not to use a knife under supervision, the goal is to use it unsupervised.

@stellarsarah Easier said than done ... and often enough one has look at when someone trips, or fails. To rise again, with more strength than before.
