economics has never really "worked" - there has always speculative booms and busts, wars over resources, and a large subsistence-worker underclass - but we're still here, right? a million years after the first monkey bartered meat for fruit, right?

we don't actually need the economy to work in a utopian fashion. If some smart dude sketches it out on a chalkboard and says "here's an equation that explains why everything is fucked" the other 7 billion of us don't actually need to do something about it.
