I think there's a case to be made about "optics" and "incrementalism", but you judge a tree by the fruit it produces. If your self-censorship isn't met with a proportional shift from the other party, you're just a useful idiot. This is transactional politics- if you are the one doing all the giving and the other party just isn't holding up their end- you're being used.
