In Theravada Buddhism, for example, colonialism and modernism drove their Tantric schools underground. You can't find it easily because Theravada became "Protestant" (analogously speaking) and refuses to play ball with medieval readings of the ancient sources, which is lame in a way, but it also kept the esoteric element of that tradition from becoming a commodity for mentally ill White women.
I'm sure this is also true for other traditions in China and India.
