There is a way forward with XMPP: everything is discussed and written in public, every decision and detail is specified in a common document, not in comments in code.

The XSF has steered the development to a point where the only requirement is to read the spec. Others will share more specific experience but I think it's worked quite well.

Oh and the entirety of ActivityPub has been thought about: see Personal Eventing Protocol (https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0163.html) and, as a beginning, Microblogging over XMPP (https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0277.html).

There's many people in the XMPP world who'd love to see this part of XMPP expand (@movim@piaille.fr, @Goffi) to finally take over the world

      Personal Eventing Protocol
      from Kevin Smith
This specification defines semantics for using the XMPP publish-subscribe protocol to broadcast state change events associated with an instant messaging and presence account. This profile of pubsub therefore enables a standard XMPP user account to function as a virtual pubsub service, easing the discovery of syndicated data and event notifications associated with such an account.

      Microblogging over XMPP
      from Valerian Saliou
This specification defines a method for microblogging over XMPP.
