- Embed this notice@shuro @hj @a1ba XP was the last Windows operating system that ran on top of a DOS framework IIRC, which is why you had backwards compatibility all the way back to the early 1980s. If you could run it on an old 8086, you could run it on a machine with Windows XP. It did exactly what it needed to and when you needed to do it. Since then, operating systems have been varying degrees of bloat, compatibility problems, and now installing Windows is functionally giving your computer spyware at the OS level.
