It depends on what level of production you're shooting for. There's a lot of foss stuff out there for audio production, but if you want full polish and easy work flow, you're going to need windows or Mac.

There's a reason Waves plugins cost a bit. And Native instruments makes some solid stuff too. If you want electric guitars, you're going to need shreddage 3 or ample etc.

Studio One is now akin to protools, and ableton is great for writing.
