   I went from being a 100% freetard to buying and using a Mac and an iPhone, I admit it is totally incongruous and I am uncomfortable about it but I just sort of fell into it when my Linux laptop bit the dust and I just wanted a high quality hardware laptop and thought that a Macbook Pro could eventually run Linux.

     @mischievoustomato One of the things I liked about floss was that you could use what you liked forever, you didn't have to change.
     
     as Linux et al got more popular, distributions started being more aggressive about forced upgrades. I lost a lot of my enthusiasm when that happened.

When it becomes not great is when they force you to upgrade, do an update that takes away features, switch to a subscription model, force DRM on you. Then you find out you were duped.

     I’d gladly switch to free everything if it didn’t get on my nerves.

     I used to use the top FOSS calculator on f-droid to count money at my job and I got written up because fosstards can’t even program a calculator without it having bugs. Literally basic addition, I ran it multiple times on different apps and the foss one just got the math wrong lmao

     I mostly use my desktop builds for office work and most of that is document editing, compiling, and printing.
     
     I have a server too that I use for storage and a few apps, mpd, local mumble, local irc, etc.

     @sun I switched to GrapheneOS on my phone and they sandbox everything Google + make it easy to restrict Internet access to any app, so for basic stuff I just use Google apps without any Internet access.

     Somehow there is no competition to Google Keyboard for example. All the alternatives are bad, so I just run it offline.

     Same for SMS.

     I agree with you here. The distros forcing wayland and pipewire for example is bullshit.
     
     I suspect there's more behind this. I notice an industry wide move away from the client-server model that has been central to linux since day one. I suspect that this is to take control away from the user, so end running internet 3 becomes more difficult.

     Music production in Linux is laughable. The DAWs and plugins just aren't available. Reaper is bottom tier and ardour is just a joke. I have a windows machine for this purpose.
     
     Never done video, so I can't say.
     
     Retrogaming is fine, but I'm old, so that's as much gaming as I do.

     And I can say that linux is often fine, but there'll be times when upgrades fuck one or multiple things marked with an asterisk. It's not even a matter of distro sometimes, because the issues I've had have even hit distros like debian. Not to mention other issues with how software support can be

     @Humpleupagus @sun I use pipewire for media consumption and production and it works fine, had a couple of issues with it, but they were fixed.

     Wayland I've been using for 2-3 years full time and it works fine too

     @sun @Humpleupagus I'm torn because I find linux cool enough still to use it, and I want my computer to do everything a computer can do, but when stuff doesn't work and/or is important to me, I feel like I just want something that just works and I don't have to worry or experience it breaking

     @Humpleupagus @sun I only know Ardour, so ardour is what I use, and it works fine now, but it used to crash a lot in the past. The daw plugins I use are mostly foss and I've managed to tard wrangle them enough for them to work fine, and @arcana can attest tot my skills

     It depends on what level of production you're shooting for. There's a lot of foss stuff out there for audio production, but if you want full polish and easy work flow, you're going to need windows or Mac.
     
     There's a reason Waves plugins cost a bit. And Native instruments makes some solid stuff too. If you want electric guitars, you're going to need shreddage 3 or ample etc.
     
     Studio One is now akin to protools, and ableton is great for writing.

     I've never used logic.
     
     I will say that many DAWs have their strength and weaknesses. Writing / Arranging in a linear DAW like Studio One or Pro Tools is a fools errand. Mixing in Ableton is equally as dumb. Thus, exporting and importing midi is key now that they've killed rewire.

     yeah the sweeter, easy to use plugins only support mac or windows. On linux i get daws that are like the raw consoles of old, and it requires me to learn and slam my head and balls against the knobs to get something that sounds good @Humpleupagus @sun @Zergling_man @Soy_Magnus

     @sun MacBooks are great Linux machines in my experience.
     
     I triple boot mine with Linux, MacOS and Windows and it works flawlessly, Apple even provides a system called boot camp to install Windows with proper drivers and make it work with the MacOS boot loader properly, and Fedora installed without issue and it’s also on the MacOS boot loader. Apple doesn’t seem to fight against other OS like Windows does, maybe because their business model is more focused around hardware so they don’t care as long as you buy their machine.
