When they say "winners write history", ignorant people think that means they write themselves as the heroes and their crushed enemies as the villains.

In reality, they write themselves as the heroes, their patsies as the villains, and the their real vanquished enemies are erased entirely. I bet you couldn't - without searching - name a leader of pre-WW1 Germany, that's intentional.
