There's a misconception that bike friendly cities like Amsterdam were always that way. They weren't. Amsterdam looked like trash in the 60s too. They made a conscious effort to turn it around, and did so over about 3 decades.

Paris is undergoing a similar transformation, and it looks like theirs will be done in under 1 decade.
