To address that: how many went to church just because it was the thing to do? That meme of Homer Simpson sleeping through services is based on a well-known reality. Eventually, even many pastors got to writing boring, bland sermons just enough to flesh out an hour.

To my (admittedly external) view, Christianity needs to rewrite itself. If Jesus is the main figure of the religion, then his word should be enough. Drop the Old Testament, drop everything in the New Testament apart from Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Drop that "lineage to King David" and every other obvious jewish hijacking. What you have left is a religion for living in harmony with yourself, other people, and the world around you.
