1. Haiku in Japanese don’t count syllables; they count •morae•. (A mora is a related but distinct syllable-adjacent concept that is focused on time, and includes things like vowel length.)
2. The 5-7-5 pattern isn’t even the most important distinguishing feature of a haiku. Serious haiku authors in English only obliquely reference it, or ignore it entirely.
