    @popey @taedryn At least here in the southern states, "sir/ma'am" isn't read as passive aggressive. It's just a tag word to change the politeness level. It also denotes a certain friendliness among strangers.

    I am, however, ready for it to phase out. It's a heavily gendered usage and that won't change, so it has to go. And its use is fading, albeit slowly.
