It can never be taken away. The license itself is a piece of property you now own, so whatever it says it grants you is what you get.
The change is that VMWare will just never sell you any perpetual licenses ever again, so you're stuck with whatever the last version is they sold you a license for. If you want to upgrade you have to do their new subscription model.
I do not believe VMWare ever sold any licenses that covered all future versions of VMWare products for eternity. The way people describe the situation makes it appear as though they are screwing over customers who paid them, when instead they're just abusing the existing customers who are locked into the VMWare ecosystem. A different flavor of evil.
