Imagine being a VMware customer right now.
As always Stallman was right.

Good luck migrating a proprietary infrastructure on dozens of bare metal servers while having business critical running software on it...Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: likes this. -

feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Tuesday, 16-Jan-2024 08:50:23 JST feld @lanodan @garfieldairlines @SuperDicq The license is still perpetual. AIUI, in the USA (and probably EU) when you receive a license for something it's forever. It can never be taken away. The license itself is a piece of property you now own, so whatever it says it grants you is what you get.
The change is that VMWare will just never sell you any perpetual licenses ever again, so you're stuck with whatever the last version is they sold you a license for. If you want to upgrade you have to do their new subscription model.
I do not believe VMWare ever sold any licenses that covered all future versions of VMWare products for eternity. The way people describe the situation makes it appear as though they are screwing over customers who paid them, when instead they're just abusing the existing customers who are locked into the VMWare ecosystem. A different flavor of evil. -

Bit surprising given how broken copyright can get, got a source about this? (USA one acceptable)
> A different flavor of evil.
Right, which either way isn't much of a difference in modern age where a constant stream of updates are often needed, specially for something like VMware products (where security issues seem quite frequent), hence why a "perpetual" licence would be appealing. -
