> Your use cause and argument is centered around a C-compiler.
Or a Forth environment or an assembler or something, but C is the lingua franca. But you don't even need to use the C compiler for its presence to matter: if you don't have it, you can't build someone else's C code. Without a compiler, you are playing the rail-shooter mission in an otherwise good game: you cannot do anything with the machine.
> Are you really going to subject them to schitty DOS and endless parch Tuesdays?
No? But I'd give the kid DOS before I gave it something that didn't have a C compiler. I can find the fuckin' Borland floppy images somewhere on the web, I am certain. If I am giving the kid a machine, I am giving the kid a machine that he can hack. If there is a wall and on the other side of the wall is shit that the vendor wants locked up, then I am not using their shit. Am I trying to raise a hapless kid or tamp down any of their curiosity about how things work? Kid wants to know how the lawnmower works, the kid can come down to the garage and we can take the lawnmower apart. Kid gets a wire and a nail and a little resistor and a AAA battery and learns how to make an electromagnet. Kid wants to know how the car works, kid wants to know how math works, kid wants to know what's inside a black hole, I'm not gonna say "no". So:
> Or will you start them off with a pretty OS that lets them create great home videos,
Fuck that consumer horseshit. Any idiot can make a video. This is the fucking nerd dojo, even girls have to learn math. There was that dude on HN that taught his kid how to use bash when the kid was like 5 and that can't be too hard because I knew how to mash shit into the keyboard to make the game come on at that age. Then there's this: https://elaineou.com/2017/09/26/how-do-i-get-my-daughter-interested-in-computers/
> prepping them (or other lay computer users) for real computing futures,
It's fucking vocational training that will be obsolete by the time they're in high school.
> You every had to support 100 Windows as helpdesk before LogMeIn.
Tech support at a dial-up ISP in the middle of nowhere in the deep south. I had to support about a thousand subscribers and I had to do it with half of them using Windows 95 (including some that were confused about the difference between 95 and 98, forget asking the service pack level) and they had to hang up the phone to test whether my instructions worked or not. If it didn't work, they hauled it in and I had to blow the sawdust and cigarette butts out of it and fix it myself, because a subscription to the ISP meant free tech support for everything, especially if we had sold them the computer. Corporate IT has it easy: they're supporting professionals in an office using computers that are standardized across the company.
> Destroy Bill Gates
That's fine, I am not a fan of the dude but fuck a Mac, it's as bad as Windows.
