A different friend of mine went to Europe (Rome I believe?) and decided to try eating some bread after giving up on gluten here from non-celiac stomach issues. He ate bread without any side effects, and continued to eat breads and pastas and all sorts of local cuisine with zero issues the entire trip. Came back thinking his wheat sensitivity was over. Instant return on eating American wheat again. Looked into it and it was a prohibited import due to local laws where they stayed. It's literally something in or about our wheat here that destroys his stomach. Chemicals or bioengineering destroying things we've eaten for millennium.
